PROFESSIONAL EXPECTATIONS FROM RECRUITERS

Highly professional behavior expected being a very formal market:

  • Start with a formal introduction via email/ text
  • Request for tentative time slots (per the local time zone)
  • Zoom, Google Hangouts, Skype can be used to set up the call
  • Do not start with a Call / WhatsApp / LinkedIn message to a candidate, it is considered to be an invasion of privacy
  • It is illegal to ask the candidate for personal details such as Age, Gender, Martial status, Sexual orientation, Religion
  • Candidates expect recruiters to be well-versed on all details about the employer and role before being approached

UNDERSTANDING SALARIES IN THE US

  • The US is a very large country and has 52 states.
  • State tax differs from one state to another.
  • The cost of living varies from one state to another
  • For example a person earning $65000 in Atlanta, Georgia is equal to $90000 in Stamford, CT.
  • It is illegal to ask the candidate for personal details such as Age, Gender, Martial status, Sexual orientation, Religion

Americans have their personal and professional life clearly demarcated. It is considered rude to call someone on a weekend. Work related calls can be scheduled only if the candidate has agreed to it.

PRACTICAL ADVICE AND TACTICS TO HELP YOU SOURCE

A very small proportion of the professional Japanese population, speak English fluently. Though English language classes are compulsory in Japanese schools, conversational skills are not given focus and many Japanese professionals struggle with English language interviews.

We suggest you not to make hasty decisions and easily dismiss applicants that may one glance, seem unfit on account of their English language skills. Being more open-minded towards applicants, it not only maximizes your chances of finding the right candidate, but it allows you to get a better gauge of the Japan market.

PROFESSIONAL EXPECTATIONS FROM RECRUITERS

  • Selling the client company and the role is a must. The main challenges faced by enterprises are large headcount needs, a shortage of qualified candidate databases and dependence on local external recruiting firms. The more specialized the required skill set, the smaller the candidate pool available.
  • The recruiter has to be well-versed with the client company culture and brand.
  • Right form of address "San", "Sensei" . eg. "Lastname"-San (first names are not used in formal communication. The norm is lastname followed by appropriate honorofic.)
  • For Japanese candidates, it would help to provide an Employer Value Proposition as they do not typically spend time researching.

JAPANESE HONOROFICS

"Sama" is the most formal Honorific. It is used when addressing customers, guests, someone of higher rank, or who garners high respect.

"San" is the most common Honorific. It is the generic equivalent of Mr. and Mrs. , and it's polite. so, you'll never offend someone.

"Sensei" is very respectful honorific. Used when someone is addressed with a subject expert or master. Teachers, lawyers, and doctors are honoured with this title in Japan.
